Rumble Strips on Route 196

After a series of head-in collisions in recent years on Route 196 in Topsham, a plan is in the works to install so-called rumble strips on that road between White House Crossing Road and the Lisbon border. A rumble strip is a cut-out in the pavement producing vibrations in vehicles and alerting drivers that they are close to the center line of traffic.

Dueling Over Daycare

There is controversy in Topsham about some newly proposed daycare regulations that would apply only to new facilities. Board of Selectmen vice-chair Dave Douglass objects to fencing requirements as well as to a plan that would prevent daycare operators from letting kids out to play early on weekends and holidays. These rules are subject to approval from town meeting voters but it’s not yet clear if they will be included in this spring’s town meeting warrant.

The Aftermath of Gunplay

A man from Wiscasset has been arrested after apparently threatening a resident at gunpoint earlier this week at a home on Mountain Road in Woolwich. There were no injuries and Sagadahoc County Sheriffs Deputies say it may have been a dispute involving family members and friends. 32-year-old Daniel Colby faces charges of criminal threatening and burglary. He’s now at the Regional Jail in Wiscasset.

Let’s Go To the Movies

There will soon be a new movie theater on the Midcoast. Smitty’s Cinema Restaurant is due to open at the Topsham Fair Mall in June and will feature not only current major film releases, but pub food, beer and wine as well.
