About This Project

On today’s WCME Midcoast Morning Buzz, Cumberland County District Attorney Jackie Sartoris says she hopes state legislators, in their newly launched session, will approve a red-flag law, which would make it easier for families and others to get guns out of the hands of those who pose immediate danger to themselves and others, without the need for a medical exam, as is prescribed in the yellow flag law currently on the books in Maine.
The proposal has significant bi-partisan support, but opponents question the need for the plan and say existing gun laws should be more widely enforced. Law enforcement data indicate that the yellow flag law is being used by police agencies much more frequently since the mass shooting in Lewiston.
