A two-man school board race is soon to be decided in Harpswell–a race with reverberations beyond that town and throughout Topsham, Bowdoin, Bowdoinham–the four towns that comprise the SAD-75 School District.
After earlier hearing from former board chair Tyler Washburn, who desires to return to the board, we heard today from Ryan Larsen, a father of three SAD-75 students, who works in the outdoor industry.
In an intriguing twist to this race, Larsen, who says he is a registered independent, is being actively supported by Harpswell Democrats.
It’s a move that flies in the face of Maine’s non-partisan tradition in school board races.
Washburn is a longtime Republican activist but tells WCME News that he has not sought support from the party in this election. As for Larsen, he says he did not seek a Democratic endorsement, and says the party’s support arose out of an invitation to speak to a Democratic gathering.
If you missed Larsen on today’s WCME Midcoast Morning Buzz you may hear it here.
