05 Mar From WCME News 9: Racially-Charged Controversy at Bowdoin College
From WCME News 9:
Racially-charged controversy at Bowdoin College where two members of student government–Duncan Cannon and Clare McInerney are facing impeachment for attending a fiesta-themed party where sombreros were worn–something that some on campus found to be racially offensive.
The two students are charged with violating a non-discrimination policy and there was to be a hearing today but that apparently has been postponed until after spring break. Michelle Kruk, a Latina senior at Bowdoin and vice-president of student government has reportedly said that “it’s not about tequila or sombreros but rather about casual racial and ethnic stereotyping and cultural insensitivity” at a school that she says has seen far too many examples of both.
Kruk says she sees little acts of casual racism every day and says she has been the target of a racial epithet on campus. She also knows of a Latino student who had bottles thrown at him.
Bowdoin president Clayton Rose in his first public comments on the issue says those who dismiss htis as just political correctness run amok are “wrong-headed.”
