Breaking from WCME News 9: Two Dead in Woolwich

In Woolwich, the collision of three sport utility vehicles on Route 1 near “A Taste of Maine” restaurant, and an older Woolwich couple is dead in the aftermath.

The chain of events began with a northbound Chevrolet Tahoe veering into the southbound lane and colliding with a Hyundai Santa Fe, and then a Ford Explorer, also southbound, was unable to avoid the collision. Dead are the Hyundai driver, 70-year-old Robert Martin and 76-year-old Carolyn Martin.

The Tahoe was operated by 33-year-old Danielle Ward of Rockport, who was traveling with seven children. She and three of those children are now at Maine Medical Center in Portland with serious injuries–none of which are considered life-threatening.

The third driver was not hurt.

The accident remains under investigation, and Sagadahoc County sheriff Joel Merry says the cause of the crash is not yet known.
