Breaking From WCME News 9: Petitions For A Mere Point Referendum

A new and expected move in what may be Brunswick’s most contentious political and environmental battle of the past year–the one over whether the town should sell–or hold onto shorefront property at 946 Mere Point Road. A citizens group questioning the sale has submitted petitions it says contain 1164 signatures supporting a voter referendum on the issue.

The next step is for Town Clerk Frank Smith to certify the signatures as valid. Town Attorney Steve Langsdorf says the petitions would not legally force a referendum although the town council could decide to hold one. The council voted narrowly to sell the property and so far only Councilor Steve Walker has given his support to a referendum.
