An Attempt At Suicide on I-295

It was an apparent suicide attempt. State Police now say the man who shot himself three times with a flare gun in his pick-up truck in Freeport is 65 year old Daniel Abbott of Portland, now being treated at Maine Medical Center for burns and head injuries.

The incident happened along Interstate 295 near the Brunswick town line, and after the shooting a small fire broke out in the cab of the truck which was put out by a passing motorist, 42-year-old Jayson Forgues of Freeport, who used his fire extinguisher, while 48-year-old Paul Oleston of Topsham pulled Abbott to safety.

The pickup had been modified to run on propane and troopers say if the fire had raged out of control, the propane tank in the truck’s bed likely would have exploded.
