Brunswick is just one of numerous communities in Cumberland County finding out these days about what happens when there are just not a sufficient number of corrections officers to watch over all those convicted of crimes.
Seven months after the Cumberland County Jail closed its doors to most arrests last September, staffing shortages continue to impact jail operations. The jail remains closed to most arrests, except for people charged with violent felonies or domestic violence charges, or for people with previous arrest warrants.
In the meantime, Brunswick Police Chief Scott Stewart tells WCME News that certain dangerous lower-level repeat offenders remain on the streets.
