Mike and Jim talk book-banning on the WCME Midcoast Morning Buzz

After Mike Violette sounded off on today’s Buzz on the emergence of eight-man football in some high schools in Maine, Mike and Jim Bleikamp tackled an emerging political and educational development in Maine.

It so happens that on one day recently, the teenaged son of newly-elected Republican state representative Amy Arata of New Gloucester came hope with a copy of the edgy new novel “Kafka on the Shore”, which he had been reading at school, and which contains some graphic sexual references. It’s written by the Japanese author Haruki Murakami and Ararat says she was appalled at one passage that she says made it seem like a woman was desirous of rape. But the book has also received some quite positive reviews.

Representative Arata is now proposing a bill in the legislature that would revise a state law governing the dissemination of obscene material to minors to remove an exception for educational purposes that allows public schools to use obscene matter.
