Breaking News: I-295 in Richmond: Don’t Go There

Traffic is moving but you are still advised to avoid Interstate 295 in Richmond throughout the afternoon and use Route 201 or the Maine Turnpike as a detour, as state police deal with a considerable clean-up job after a state police cruiser driven by Trooper Greg Stevens was rear-ended by a tractor trailer just north of the Richmond exit. The truck then caught fire and ended up in the median. The truck driver was not hurt, but the trooper was taken to Maine Medical Center in Portland with non-life threatening injuries, and police say Trooper Stevens was able to walk away from the wreck.

The trooper’s SUV had been in the breakdown lane just prior to the collision. The fire that destroyed the truck also caused a grass fire in the median, which was put out by area fire departments.

Pictured here is the damaged state police cruiser.
